The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost is much more than a comforter.
The Holy Spirit is one part of the triune Godhead that we serve.
God the Father is God
God the Son is God
God the Holy Spirit is God
This is not modalism where we believe that each part has a distinct and limited purpose for existing.
Example – Jesus Christ only served the purpose prophet, savior, and Son of God, excluding the fact that He himself is 100% God.
We see the Christ mentioned in Genesis 1:26 which we touched on Wednesday, “Let us make man in our image”.
We see the preincarnate Christ visit Abraham when Lot is dwelling in Sodom.
We see the preincarnate Christ wrestle Jacob for a blessing.
And we see him many other times throughout the Old Testament.
“No man has seen the Father, except for the Son”
Jesus is the visual physical manifestation of God, because He is God.
Yet God is a Spirit and must be worshipped in Spirit and in Truth.
In the beginning the Spirit moved upon the face of the waters.
The Spirit of God is also 100% God in essence and capability.
-Romans 8:1-11
1. The Spirit of God is mighty
a. Judges 15:14-16 – “14And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands. 15And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith. 16And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.”
b. 1 Samuel 16:13 – “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.”
c. 1 Samuel 18:5-7 – “5And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants. 6And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick. 7And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
2. The Spirit of God is Knowledge and Wisdom
a. Ezekiel 37:1-3 – “1The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. 3And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.”
b. Exodus 31:2-4 – “2See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: 3And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,”
3. The Spirit of God is the Nature of God
a. Isaiah 61:1-3 – “1The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”
That same Spirit resides in you.
Acts 1:8 – “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
