What is a father’s role in the house? What is the job laid upon a man’s shoulders for his home?

Most all men take after their own fathers, it’s inevitable. Those who didn’t have a present father gained their traits, their morals, and their beliefs from men they respected in the world and the world itself.

I remember as a young teen, walking the streets of Duncan Park with my little brother and friends and making a vow. “I will never smoke, I will never drink, and I will never do any drugs. That stuff is terrible.” I made this vow on witnessing all the people in my life who I respected have everything ripped away from them. The depression they suffered, the anger that drove them crazy, and the families that were torn apart.

Yet, inevitably, I followed in my father’s footsteps for a time.

Father’s, husband’s, men, we have a great load to carry.

What is a father’s role?

1.      To establish our domain. (VS. 8)

a.      To build it.

b.     To fashion it.

c.      To protect it.

Matthew 7:24-25 – “24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”

2.      To ensure our domain is not tarnished nor blemished.

a.      Keep our works pure. (VS. 9)

b.     Do not incorporate strange beliefs and doctrines. (VS. 10)

c.      Don’t try to be something else, a watered down version, to fit in. (VS. 11)

John 17:14-17 – “14I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

3.      To wear the banner of our salvation and the seal of God proudly. (VS. 12)

a.      Let His Word be your foundation with Christ as the Chief Cornerstone.

b.     Let the walls exude His glory and righteousness.

c.      Let the roof be a high place, a tower of refuge, exalted by God’s power.

d.     Let the light of life burn brightly from the windows of your heart.

Romans 13:12-14 – “12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”

Joshua 24:14-15 – “14Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. 15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
