Fear, Knowledge, and Love – 1 Samuel 17:23-24

1 Samuel 17:23-24 – “23And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. 24And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.”

·         When I was a kid, I feared things of the unknown.

·         As I became an adult, I began to fear things due to the knowledge I had of them.

-Knowledge

·         Hosea 4:6-7 – “6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. 7As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.”

o   Although knowledge has caused a more in depth fear of things, proper knowledge is required of us by God.

o   We must absorb God’s law lest we fall for the traps and temptations of this world.

·         Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

o   When we acquire proper knowledge, we learn of the sovereignty of God and the judgment that awaits the lost.

o   We grow in fear and reverence of God and this is the beginning of true knowledge.

-Love

·         1 John 4:18 – “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

o   The regenerated heart of a believer has no room left for fear, for love abounds when a relationship with God is secured through faith in Jesus Christ.

o   The joy of life provided by Christ is not hindered by torment, but filled with hope and assurance of eternal life.
